Workplace With vs. Without a Union
โ = Your workplace without a union โ = Your workplace with a union
๐ Job Security
โ Employment is “at will.” Anyone can be fired at any time for no reason, and they have no recourse.
โโ Employees cannot be fired without “just cause.” There must be a clear and specific reason for firing.
๐งพ Dues and Wages
โ Non-union workers don’t pay dues, but are less likely to have health insurance, and receive 20-30% (averaging $191 per week) less than unionized workers. They save money by not paying dues, but the consequences of not having a union are far more costly.
โ
โ Union members pay dues, but they are 30% more likely to have health insurance and pension plans available, and earn 20-30% more per week than non-union workers (Source). Dues finance crucial union operations like contract negotiations and enforcement, organizing, and member-driven programs. In a newly organized workplace, you will not start paying dues until after there is a first union contract in place. Why would workers vote for a contract that isn’t worth the dues they pay?
๐ช Hiring and Promotion
โ Without a union, the employment terms are exclusively up to the employer and can be changed at any time.
โ Neither the union nor management can make changes to employment terms without agreement from each side.
๐ฅณ Creating Change
โ The employer will listen to concerns, but they are not required in any way to do anything about them, and change often happens on an individual basis. Even when change does happen, nothing is guaranteed to be permanent.
โ
โ Change is accomplished through a concerted and democratic process as issues arise, and are made permanent through a union contract.
๐ฅ Receiving Benefits
โ The employer, and employer only, determines wages, benefits, etc. The two options are to accept their terms or find another job.
โ
โ Union contracts require both sides to negotiate wages and working conditions.
In the end, workplace changes will be decided by YOU, the workers.
Instead of everything being left up to management, you will now have the strength, the power, and the protection to decide what kind of workplace you deserve.
