We are workers at Community Integrated Services (CIS), and we love the work we do supporting adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. We began organizing at the beginning of the pandemic to address health and safety concerns. 

 

We soon realized we needed to fix longstanding, and pervasive issues that have made the job unsustainable. Unpredictable scheduling, high turnover, and low pay are only a few of the issues that have made the job hard on workers and lowered the standard of care for the people we support. 

 

Individual workers at CIS have tried using petitions, meetings, and collective actions to resolve these issues. However, it became clear that these attempts could not ensure permanent change. We decided to join together with our coworkers and form a union to negotiate and secure changes through a contract. 

 

A union gives us a say in our workplace and a seat at the table. Other agencies that provide services for people with disabilities in Philadelphia, like JEVS and SPIN, have unions. We deserve that too!
