​Why does union busting happen?

Organizing challenges the status quo of the workplace by giving workers a say in decision-making which before only the boss had the power to do. Organizing is considered a threat, and the boss will fight to keep that power. Once an employer knows its workers are organizing or unionizing, they will begin their boss/anti-union campaign, usually with the help of expensive lawyers. Many of the tactics the boss will use are designed to disorganize the process, divide coworkers, and create an atmosphere of fear. Keep in mind, the right to organize and unionize is protected by federal law!

 

What does union busting look like?

Usually, bosses have a union-busting playbook that they rely on. Knowing the playbook helps workers stay ahead of the game. Below are a variety of classic tactics that the boss uses to disorganize workers – these are a part of what is known as a boss campaign.
