You will be forced to pay high union dues
β LIE β
We do not pay a penny in dues until we are covered by a union contract that the workers at CIS vote on. We will only pay after we start receiving the benefits of the union. Why would you vote “yes” on a contract that isn’t worth the cost of dues?
TRUTH OR LIE?
Employees get to have a say in whether the union strikes
β TRUTHβ
Only the employees at CIS can vote to go on strike. No AFSCME official can force workers to strike. Learn more about strikes here.
TRUTH OR LIE?
Unionizing will hurt the people we serve
β LIE β
Better wages and working conditions will improve the lives of workers, which will have a positive impact on the quality of services we provide. Participants deserve the full support that can only come from workers whose needs are met.
TRUTH OR LIE?
Once you vote for a union, they take complete control
β LIE β
We have control of the union because WE are the union. As a member of the union you have a voice and get a say in significant material issues, like union leadership and voting on contract offers.
TRUTH OR LIE?
We get to elect our shop stewards
β TRUTH β
Shop stewards are elected coworkers that act as the first line of protection at CIS.
TRUTH OR LIE?
You will lose your benefits
β LIE β
A union allows us to bargain for better wages, benefits, tuition reimbursement, mileage rates, and all other employment conditions.
TRUTH OR LIE?
A union won't provide any protections you don't already have
β LIE β
Unionized workers have Weingarten rights. Read more about Weingarten rights here!
TRUTH OR LIE?
With a union you will no longer be able to talk directly to your manager or supervisor
β LIE β
There are no union rules about whether or not you can talk directly with management - all that unions provide is an added level of support through representation, so that management can no longer abuse their power over individual workers.
