Who Is Our Job Sustainable For? (From the Archives, 11-11-2022)

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

Why do we work? Working for a paycheck allows us to feed our families, pay rent, and live our lives. A j

ob that doesn’t do that is simply not sustainable for workers.

CIS workers are struggling. We have to deal with the constant change in scheduling and commit a significant portion of our week to open availability with no guarantee of pay. Time spent traveling from job site to job site is a large part of the job and travel reimbursement can be inconsistent and is often confusing. When it becomes clear that the job takes up too much time and doesn’t even pay the bills, people leave. The turnover rate at CIS is incredibly high and is proof that CIS is not sustainable for its workers.

So, who is the job sustainable for? The boss.

As we head into the holiday season CIS workers are facing the effects of inflation, rising gas prices, increasing interest rates, and continued safety concerns from COVID. The struggle that CIS workers have been facing will only continue to get worse. What CIS workers need are higher wages, less chaotic schedules, and some basis of stability. Real stability. We all appreciate a nice boss, but a nice boss does not pay the bills. An employer that doesn’t take care of its workers is not keeping up their end of the bargain.

We all deserve to spend time with our families and have a moment of reprieve from a tough year. So, what can workers do to make sure the boss keeps up their end of the bargain? Workers can come together and have each others’ backs to ask for what we need to do our jobs and get compensated fairly for our time and work. C.I.S. Workers United is committed to making the changes needed for the job to be sustainable — not just for the boss, but for ALL CIS WORKERS.
