CIS Workers Deserve Professional Support! (From the Archives, 09-22-2022)

We Are Professionals!

Have you ever felt unprepared or not supported for your shift at CIS?

For example, with job coaching, CIS generally provides only 3 days of shadow shifts with more experienced job coaches before expecting a new employee to provide independent job-coaching coverage. This leaves us feeling anxious and unsure of how to support participants. We are expected to rely on guess work rather than be provided a solid training program. It’s clear that CIS does not support us in becoming more confident as job coaches.

What can CIS do to better support us?

Training and education as a whole helps workers to grow and develop, both at their jobs and as people. This could include attending workshops that expand our knowledge specific to our field or leadership training for longer term development. CIS workers are constantly thrown into new situations, serving many different types of people, and our training should match these demands. In order to best develop workers’ skills, CIS should provide concrete and more in-depth training and education.

By having a solid foundational training for new employees, and ongoing professional development opportunities, CIS workers can also better serve our participants. Setting us up for success means we can present our best selves to participants, and better support their needs.

C.I.S. Workers United is dedicated to addressing workplace conditions and concerns, like lack of workplace training. If you are interested in helping change your workplace for the better, join us!
