A Look Back at Our Accomplishments (From the Archives, 01-05-2022)

New Year, Old Fight!

In April 2020, workers of Community Integrated Services came together because we were alone and scared in an unprecedented global pandemic. We and the people with disabilities we serve are essential workers and continue to do our jobs in these hazardous conditions. In this crisis, when management was not looking out for us, we had to look out for each other. We needed safer working conditions and we discovered we needed so much more. After trying over and over to come to management individually, we realized that the only way we could solve these issues would be if we united together with enough of our coworkers that CIS had to make changes. This is why we started organizing C.I.S. Workers United.

2021 was a big year for C.I.S. Workers United. We grew to include more and more of our coworkers and forced management to actually begin making improvements to our workplace. But this is not enough! Management continues to exclude workers from the decision making process. We do the work, have essential experience, and most importantly, we deserve a say in the decisions that directly impact us.

It's a new year, but this is an old fight. We will continue this struggle in 2022 for a more dignified, equitable, and sustainable workplace for all!

Here's a recap of what we have accomplished since we went public on October 1st, 2021:

-We delivered our petition of urgent issues that need to change! -We launched C.I.S. Workers United social media (FB, IG, Twitter) -When management refused to meet with us, we responded with our first media event! We were on CBS news! -When management violated our rights to organize, we had a second media event to let them know we were not afraid and were ready to protect each other and our coworkers! We were on the news again! -We negotiated with our Executive Direction to settle with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for almost a month because of their violation of our rights. We worked together, held our ground, and won! -We created this biweekly newsletter to share updates and keep coworkers and supporters informed! -We created a monthly job support meet-up for all CIS workers who are members or non-members of C.I.S. Workers United. Job coaches need support too!
